Friend, Do It This Way
Joseph Flying Bye (Kangi Ho Tanka 1917-2000) was a respected elder, medicine man, decorated war veteran, craftsman, dancer, pipemaker, singer, and keeper of Lakota history and culture. He learned to respect both the traditional Lakota ways from his grandfather, who was a medicine man, and Christianity from his father who was a pastor. He was often called upon to speak at pow-wows, memorials, and sundances, as well as performing the traditional ceremonies for healing, marriage, naming, making of relatives, passage into womanhood, hanbleceya, sundancing, and burial. He was a member of the Red Feather Society as well as a chief and spiritual leader for his Lakota people.
