Traditional Literatures of the American Indian
Texts and Interpretations
This book is the first book devoted to describing and analyzing a variety of traditional Native American narratives, not as 'primitive' tales, but as literature. Each of the five essays making up the volume includes translations, sometimes accompanied by the original text, of one or more stories, together with commentaries on the principles of structure and style that distinguish each as a work of art.
