This is the story of a young, white academic's encounter with the Mesquakies - popularly known as the Fox, or Sac and Fox, Indians - whom he visited to collect folklore for his dissertation. Where McTaggert had expected to find a dying oral culture, he found instead a continuing way of life, based on family and clan, that links the present-day Mesquakie Indians with previous generations.
