Mammals of North America
John James Audubon in the West
Artist / Naturalist John James Audubon is well known for his enormously popular paintings of birds. Many people are not even aware that he made beautifully detailed studies of mammals as well. This book chronicles the creation of Audubon's series of illustrations devoted to the four-legged mammals of North America. It is a fascinating story that includes the artist's final journey into the American West to gather specimens and his correspondence and collaboration with his sons and others in bringing this, his last masterwork, to publication. A beautiful book with wonderful illustrations and a great source of animal images from the early 19th century.
