This is a multisensory and multicultural gem. It utilizes poetry, music, and art to relate a story of powwow and intergenerational connection. The sub-title is Iskewsis… Dear Mother. The book is accompanied by a CD of song and music that the reader may listen to while following the text and viewing the full-page colored paintings. Either the book or the CD is complete individually, but they complement each other to increase the sensory experience of the reader. A reading/listening of this tale will stimulate imagination and reflection, as will the paintings depicting various participants in full attire. Teachers of all levels and disciplines will be able to utilize this resource as a springboard for a variety of creative activities for students. The text and songs are in English and in Mi’kmaq, a Canadian indigenous language. The reader will be left with new insight into a traditional powwow with its mystic dancers and a daughter’s remembrance of her mother through the ritual. The young at heart of all ages will relish this truly sensitive celebration of heritage and culture. This unique resource is a must for the library for youth.
