Excavating Voices
Listening to Photographs of Native Americans
Presents a great selection of historic photographs by F.A. Rinehart, C.M. Bell, Edward S. Curtis, and others. Most of the photos are of Lakota, Apache, Navajo, and Hopi. Includes three essays that analyze the reasons and motivations for photographing Indians in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. One author best describes the photos: "The portraits have come to tell me more more about the photographers and the times they lived in than the subjects themselves."
