Artifacts / Artifakes
Plains Indian Art Reproductions: The Law
The 1984 Plains Indian seminar of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, WY, had the theme Artifacts / Artifakes which was the compelling issue of trying to distinguish original Indian objects from those produced by non-native artisans to simulate authentic Indian arts and crafts. This book presents the paper by Richard W. Edwards Jr., a lawyer. He presents the legal issues which may arise involving all parties to a transaction involving a reproduction thought to be an original. The potential liability of the craftsman and seller is examined. Very interesting reading, particularly for those involved in creating reproductions as well as the collector of vintage Native American material.
