Powwow Country

Chris Roberts provides a great glimpse at the modern day powwow. Photos present the dance, drum, and many of the activities which take place. The powwow is not limited to dancing and singing "Indian" but is an overall term given to a gathering of Indian people in a social event. With dancing as its primary focus, the powwow is a celebration of culture. Besides the "intertribal" dancing, many other events are scheduled in the four to five day period over which a powwow takes place. Indian people gather to rodeo, gamble at hand games, honor relatives with giveaways, complete in athletic runs and horse races, parade, schedule exhibition events and special ceremonies, feed friends and visitors, and buy a great variety of goods at the concession stands. Visiting with friends and acquaintances, however, commands the prime attraction of all participants.
