Cochula's Journey
This novel for young readers is the story of Cochula, proud teenage daughter of an Indian chief, who is taken captive by Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto. On her journey with the Spaniards, Cochula discovers that she wants to be a medicine woman, as her grandmother had been. She also discovers that she can be part of two worlds. Cochula's Journey tells about Native American medicine, beliefs, and ceremonies, and about the Spanish expedition on which Europeans first encountered native peoples of the interior Southeast.
